Komatsu Undercarriage Maintenance

TIPS TO MAINTAIN AND PROLONG YOUR KOMATSU UNDERCARRIAGE

Komatsu offers a variety of dozer tracks to meet the demanding applications of construction, mining, forestry, and waste. The company’s six different types of link assemblies for dozers include the following:

  • General Construction (GC)

The GC link is designed and built for use in relatively light-duty applications and is available as a standard option on all Komatsu dozers.

  • AR (Abrasive Resistant)

The AR track link has a bushing composed of a different material compared to other bushings. It also features a deep hardened depth that is created using a patented heat treatment, which extends track life by 50 percent compared to standard tracks, says the company. AR tracks are designed for abrasive applications such as loam and sand etc.

  • Heavy Duty (HD)

The HD track link features heavy-duty links that are more durable than standard links; they feature an increased link height and a larger bushing to deliver optimal performance in rocky applications. The AIR bushings on the undercarriage are more impact resistant than standard tracks and are more flexible than AR tracks. These features make the track well suited to both abrasive and impact applications.

  • Dual Bushing

Komatsu’s Dual Bushing features two bushings; one bushing is fixed while the other rotates around it; this minimizes segment and bushing wear and lengthens track life by 100 percent compared to standard tracks, says the company. Internal lubrication of the bushings also minimizes bushing wear. These tracks are available for large size dozers operating in abrasive applications.

  • SALT (Sealed and Lubricated Track)

Salt tracks are also lubricated with to reduce wear between the pin and the bushing. They also feature high-performance seals that minimize the risk of link pitch extension, thereby increasing the life of the components.

  • PLUS (Parallel Link Undercarriage System)

On the PLUS, all components are designed for equal wear life. This decreases downtime and maintenance. Also, the undercarriage features oil-lubricated, rotating bushings that rotate freely, unlike the fixed bushings used on conventional undercarriage systems. Fixed bushings wear on one side and then you rotate them, and they wear on the other side. Free rotating bushings wear evenly on all sides, decreasing wear on bushings and sprockets.

Components that contribute to a longer undercarriage life include bigger and parallel links, larger diameter carrier rollers combined with a deeper, hardened tread surface result in longer carrier roller life, and track rollers with higher flanges improve track life and track guidance.

Other unique features include recessed sprocket segments with a slot on their side face for easier disposal of debris in the tracks, thereby lowering track tension and pressure on seals, Komatsu-designed seals that decrease the risk of leakage–protecting nearby components from damage—and the insertion of a wedge ring between the link and the pin which decreases the fitting force on the track assembly thereby making component changes easier.

Although the more innovative undercarriages cost more than general tracks, they can be customized to particular applications, thereby prolonging life, decreasing downtime, and providing lower owing-and-operating costs.
