Caterpillar has been providing heavy equipment solutions for over 90 years. In Fact, the heavy equipment industry would be a very different place without the innovative solutions that have come from Caterpillar. From making the world’s first mass-produced diesel engine in 1931 to designing the elevated sprocket in 1977, Caterpillar has continued to innovate and improve the heavy equipment industry since its beginnings.
It all started in 1886 when Benjamin Holt built his first combined harvester. By 1890, Holt was building his first steam tractor engine. At the time, steam tractors were very heavy and frequently sank into the farmland. Holt knew there was a solution to this problem and tried laying a temporary plank road ahead of the steam tractor. This was a slow and expensive process, but it was one step closer to a solution. Holt then tried replacing the wheels on a 40 horsepower Holt steamer, No. 77 with a set of wooden tracks secured to chains, and with that changed the way the world plowed.
